Following Sam McCallum serious ankle injury at Millwall, United moved quickly to secure the services of Hjelde on a loan deal until the end of the season from Sunderland.

Ironically Hjelde's last appearance for the Black Cats was against United in the play-off final at Wembley last May, but Norwegian U21 international who is son of former Nottingham Forest defender Jon Olav and started his professional career at Celtic has experience of the second tier from a spell at Leeds United and a temporary stint at Rotherham United.
