Having made his name at Nottingham Forest and more recently Blackburn Rovers, United secured the services of the Chilean international in January 2024, with the versatile forward joining on-loan for the remainder of the season from Villarreal in La Liga.

Brereton made his debut in red and white at Gillingham in the FA Cup, before scoring on his league debut at Bramall Lane against West Ham, he then netted inside a minute against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.
