Stephen Bettis believes United caught rival clubs on the hop following last month's club record transfer of Norwegian international Sander Berge.
The Blades chief executive says Berge was a player who had remained on the radar, after initial interest was shown last summer, but it was felt United had to move swiftly to secure his services, rather than waiting until the end of the season.
Meanwhile, boss Chris Wilder says the Blades must continue to be 'smart in the way we deal', despite the signing of the 21-year-old, in addition to four other arrivals in January.
Wilder was keen to praise his recruitment team, whilst also thanking the board for their continued backing and support for allowing him to accelerate the deal to sign Berge.
