Sheffield United Women ended 2019 with another emphatic win away at Leicester City to ensure they maintained a three-point gap to Aston Villa before the pair meet in the first game back after the winter break.
A first Blades hat-trick for Katie Wilkinson plus Aimee Palmer's strike from the edge of the box sealed a 20th win in all competitions in what has been an excellent year for Carla Ward's side.
Becky Flaherty, Jade Pennock, Maddy Cusack and Olivia Fergusson all returned to the side and it took less than five minutes for United to take the lead when Wilkinson ran onto Sophie Barker's ball over the defence and placed a low effort beyond Demi Lambourne.
The Blades looked to build on their dominance but it took another 20 minutes before Palmer lifted a lovely effort over Lambourne from the edge of the box after more good work from Barker.
Pennock saw an effort go wide as United looked to kill the game off but they allowed Leicester a route back into the match when Paige Bayley-Gayle ran through and dinked an effort over Flaherty to make it 2-1.
As they did against London Bees though the Blades responded immediately and Wilkinson grabbed her second when she cut inside and rolled a low effort beyond the grasp of Lambourne.
Lambourne did though thwart Wilkinson's first attempt at grabbing her hat-trick and got a leg to Barker's low effort before the second half settled down into a relatively quiet affair.
Neither Lambourne nor Flaherty had a huge amount to do until Wilkinson sealed her hat-trick with just over 10 minutes to go, heading home Pennock's dinked cross into the box.
Pennock herself was denied again by Lambourne soon after as the Blades looked for a fifth but they saw the game out in comfortable fashion.
