United Women v Aston Villa - Bramall Lane preview

25 September 2018

Sheffield United will be looking for their first league win of the season when they welcome Aston Villa to Bramall Lane this Sunday in the FA Women's Championship.

The showpiece occasion will see Carla Ward's side play at the Lane for the first time against familiar opponents after facing Villa in the FA Continental Cup last month.

After tough opening league matches against favourites Manchester United and a Durham side much more experienced at this level than the Blades, Sunday is a chance for United to get points on the board after beating Gemma Davies' side at Boldmere in the cup last month.

Frustratingly, the most recent league match against Tottenham Hotspur was postponed on Sunday due to adverse weather conditions, giving Ward plenty of time to prepare the side for this weekend's encounter.

In United's first ever match since gaining a licence for the new FA Women's Championship, Ward took her team to the Midlands last month and despite a big step into the unknown the Blades came away with a well-deserved 2-1 victory.

After missing several chances during a good performance given the level of debutants involved, centre-back Danielle Cox gave the Blades the lead before Nadine Hanssen equalised for the home side.

It was left to one of United's veterans to seal the points on the evening though as substitute Tania Marsden ran through to score the winner with little over five minutes of normal time to play with a penalty shootout looming.

Ward will be hoping to call on a fully fit squad with only defender Ellie Fletcher likely a doubt after the on-loan went off with a knock against Manchester United last week.

United attacker Beth Merrick will be hoping for a chance to shine against the team she made her name for, the tricky forward left Villa to join United during the summer but was only on the bench against her former side last month.

Join us on Sunday at Bramall Lane, kick off 2pm.
