Women's team news

29 November 2018

United Women head to Millwall Lionesses this weekend in the FA Women's Championship and boss Carla Ward has had bad news on the injury front in the build up to Sunday's fixture.

Central defender Lisa Ryan has suffered a knee ligament injury that will see her miss out on the rest of the season.

Ryan, who signed from WPSL club Little Rock Rangers, had been in great form until her unfortunate injury against Aston Villa Ladies. Final scans confirmed Ward's fears of a torn anterior cruciate ligament

"Unfortunately, Lisa will need to undergo an ACL operation, ruling her out until next season. We will be supporting her for the duration of her recovery," said Ward.

Meanwhile, on loan Liverpool defender Ellie Fletcher has suffered a torn meniscus. Having made five appearances for the Merseyside team, Ellie joined the Blades on a season long loan in a deal that saw goalkeeper Fran Kitching go in the opposite direction on a permanent deal.

Manager Ward is resigned to losing the services of Fletcher for up to 14 weeks as she recovers from her cartilage operation.

"It's hugely disappointing for both girls because they had been working hard on the training ground to secure their places in the starting XI and when given the chance they took their opportunities, putting in some great performances."

United Women wish Lisa and Ellie the best of luck with their recoveries and look forward to welcoming them back into the squad.
