Women's Lewes preview

20 November 2018

Sheffield United's women's team will be looking to bounce back from last weekend's disappointing defeat at London Bees when they welcome Lewes FC to Sheffield this weekend.

Goals from Ruesha Littlejohn and Nicola Gibson condemned the Blades to their first defeat since the trip to Charlton Athletic after recording back-to-back victories over Crystal Palace and Leicester City.

Carla Ward named an unchanged eleven to the side that beat the Foxes just before the international break, but the Blades don't have to wait long to bounce back when they welcome Lewes on Sunday afternoon.

Lewes themselves haven't won a league game since they themselves beat Leicester back in September, going on a run of defeats which saw the club part company with manager John Donoghue early last week.

United's fellow FA Women's Championship newcomers did pick up a point against Aston Villa last weekend and remain just above Ward's side in the table, but a win back on home soil this week would put United above the visitors.

Lewes do though have some in-form players themselves with Rebecca Carter recently nominated for player of the month whilst the south coast side have also just signed former Reading player Sophie O'Rourke after a spell in Iceland, the youngster playing the final five minutes of their recent match against Aston Villa.

For United, it will be about returning to winning ways after a success opening match against Leicester at Olympic Legacy Park in which England Under 21 international Bex Rayner scored a late winner.

Rayner had to go off injured at The Hive on Sunday and her loss would be a blow to Ward, but the manager was able to welcome Nicole Kemp back from injury and award vital minutes to 16-year-old Izzy Ford in place of Rayner against Bees.

This Sunday is our annual Rainbow Laces fixture, showing support of LGBT+ inclusivity, this will see the players taking to the field wearing the distinctive rainbow laces on their boots.

Join us this Sunday at the Home of Sheffield United Women the Olympic Legacy Park, kick off 1pm. Tickets on sale now.
