Islington-born Carruthers, a Republic of Ireland youth international, began his career at Arsenal before moving to Aston Villa. A successful loan spell with the MK Dons that began in August 2013 saw him sign permanently for the Dons 12 months later and he went on to make 100 appearances at stadium:mk in all competitions. In the January transfer window of 2017, United paid an undisclosed fee for his services, with Carruthers signing a three-and-a-half-year deal.
