Blades 1-1 Fulham - report

18 October 2020

Sponsored by

Billy Sharp's late penalty earnt United a first Premier League point of the season against Fulham at Bramall Lane on Sunday.

Ademola Lookman had given the visitors a second-half lead, before referee Andre Marriner awarded the Blades a spot-kick having consulted with VAR and looked at his pitchside monitor. Both sides had chances to win it, after Aleksander Mitrović had earlier missed from twelve yards.

For the clash against the Cottagers, boss Wilder made three changes with Lowe handed his Premier League debut. McBurnie and Norwood were also recalled, as Robinson, Osborn and Burke dropped to the bench. Egan was cleared to play and captained the side, as Brewster was also named amongst the substitutes.

There was some early concern for the Blades as Lowe suffered a heavy collision with Loftus-Cheek, but thankfully he got to his feet and was able to continue. Fulham enjoyed plenty of the ball in the opening exchanges and Ramsdale was called into the action to deny Cairney at the expense of a corner. In response, United pressed high and won the ball back on a couple of occasions, with Lundstram forcing Areola to tip over with an effort from the edge of the area.

That corner was only partially cleared and Adarabioyo had to make a vital interception to deny McBurnie at the near post. From a second corner, Basham eventually found space down the right having got the better of Aina, but McBurnie couldn't direct his header on target with Areola rooted to the spot. United were now enjoying more possession and more importantly territory. Berge broke down the right and after Ream couldn't clear, Basham slid an effort just wide of the far post.

On 18 minutes, Lowe was forced off following the aforementioned clash early on and he was replaced by Robinson, with Stevens reverting to wing-back. Anguissa was the first player to be carded for a cynical foul on Lundstram as United threatened to counter having won the ball in midfield. Another quick break saw McGoldrick release Stevens and he drew a low save from a diving Areola.

As the half hour approached it was United continuing to force the issue. Berge powered clear down the right after robbed Cairney and from Basham's cross Areola made a reflex save to deny McBurnie with a near post header. The Norwegian midfielder was seeing plenty of the ball and having advanced forward following Norwood's ball forward, he drew another save from Areola. Then, from the left, Robinson's long throw evaded everyone as it went across the face of goal.

Eight minutes before half-time, the Blades had the ball in the net, as Norwood spit the defence to find Berge who fired across the six-yard box where it was diverted home, but following a brief check for offside the goal was disallowed. At the other end, Anguissa won a free-kick in a dangerous position and Mitrović took aim, but Ramsdale was equal to his powerfully stuck effort and that was the last action of note.

United were quickly out of the blocks in the second half and McBurnie had an header saved by Areola from Baldock's cross, but the assistant referee flagged for offside following the save been made. But in response Fulham broke at pace and Ramsdale had to make a quick recovery to deny Lookman having initially fumbled Cavaleiro's cross from the right.

On 57 minutes, the Blades survived a huge scare. Robinson was penalised for handball from Cairney's corner, but from the penalty spot, Mitrović fired over the bar. Then, referee Marriner hampered a retreating Norwood as Fulham broke, but Robinson atoned for his earlier mistake by clearing Cavaleiro's attempted pass across the face of goal.

Brewster was introduced for his debut, replacing McGoldrick, but it was Fulham who continued to break with purpose and Egan was ideally placed to avert danger from Cairney's ball before Baldock cleared.

But on 77 minutes, the game did swing in the visitors favour as LOOKMAN beat Berge, got a fortunate bounce in a challenge with Basham before rifling into the top corner past Ramsdale. Moments later, United's goalkeeper kept them in the game, denying Mitrović from Anguissa's pull back.

Wilder threw SHARP on, replacing Basham, before Cavaleiro was booked for hauling down Stevens on the left and from the resulting free-kick, United were awarded a penalty following a consultation with VAR and the pitchside monitor, as Mitrović was adjudged to have fouled Robinson after Areola had dropped Norwood's set-piece. United's number ten did the rest from the spot.

United were now looking for the winner and Sharp was fractionally offside as he forced Areola to save with his legs from Berge's cross, as five minutes added time were signalled. Fulham won two corners in quick succession, with Lookman and then Lemina trying their luck with shots from distance, before Mitrović headed wide at the near post from Lookman's cross and of the far post from Cairney's delivery. But in the end, the spoils were shared.

As it happened...

Fulham to kick-off through Aleksandar Mitrovic and we're underway!

Stoppage here as Max Lowe is down injured and it doesn't look good,.

It came about through a collision with Ruben Loftus-Cheek...Innocent challenge but Lowe has taken a real bang and he's still down.

That was concerning for a while but he's up and ready to resume.

Some patient build-up play by Fulham who have settled quickly. Cairney hits one fron distance and Ramsdale palms it behind.

Cairney's corner is headed clear by McBurnie.

United win the ball back high up the pitch, McBurnie finds Norwood who pings a pass into Lundstram. He shoots from distance, Areola tips over and Fulham clear the corner.

United come again. Stevens' low cross is turned towards goal by McBurnie but it deflects wide.

Nothing initially comes of the corner, but United eventually work it wide for Basham to cross but McBurnie's flicked header is just wide.

Another United chance.

Again, starting by winning possession with a great tackle. Berge flies down the wing and his low cross is deflected into the path of Basham who steers an effort wide.

Low effort from Loftus-Cheek from 25 yards straight at Ramsdale.

Lowe is down again as United win a free-kick inside their own half.

United forced into an early change then as Lowe can't continue and he's replaced by Jack Robinson.

Fulham threaten as Anguissa belts a shot towards goal, blocked superbly by Norwood.

United win the ball back inside their own half and Lundstram gallops forward, taken down by Anguissa and that's the game's first booking.

Lovely stuff from United winning the ball back and some quick one-touch play through a number of players sees Lundstram play in Stevens who gallops into the area on the angle, his low shot held by Areola.

Stevens now reverting to his usual left wing-back role as expected following Lowe's withdrawl. Robinson slotting in at left-side centre-back.

United moving the ball well, but the ball is put out because Lookman is down after an earlier challenge by Norwood.

Brilliant work by Berge wh runs wide, holds the ball up, lays it off to Basham who produces a lovely cross for McBurnie but Areola makes a great save to deny the Scotsman. Great chance.

Berge carries the ball forward and decides to shoot from 20 yards, saved low down by Areola.

Long-throw from Robinson goes right across the area and somehow no-one touches the ball...

Wonderful football again from United.

McGoldrick holds the play, waits for the of Stevens who crosses and the ball is touched just wide. Flag did eventually go up against Stevens for offside.

Ball in the net for United, but flag is up for offside.

Ball was slipped through to Berge who slides it into the six-yard area, where a Fulham player converts but after VAR check, Berge is just offside.

Cairney free-kick initially missed by Basham, Loftus-Cheek chests down to shoot, but a brilliant recovery from Basham as he flicks the ball clear.

Basham trips Anguissa on the edge of the area.

Cairney, plays it short to Mitrovic who fires through the ball with a well connected strike which is held by Ramsdale.

Again, United pick up a loose ball and Berge drives forward to the by-line, he digs out the cross but it is too strong and sails out for a throw.

Three minutes added time.

Half time

Blades 0 - 0 Fulham

Goalless at half-time, United have had a goal rightly disallowed by VAR for offside.

Teams back out here...

United to kick-off through Lundstram, and we're back underway!

Chance again at the start of the second-half as Baldock's cross is headed straight at Areola by McBurnie. The flag though is rightly raised as there's an offside so it wouldn't have counted.

McBurnie collects the ball in the channel, cuts back inside and is hauled down just outside the area.

Norwood free-kick is towards the back post but Fulham clear comfortably.

Worrying moment as Ramsdale spills an initial cross but recovers with a wonderful reaction save to get off the ground to deny Lookman.

End-to-end stuff as Fulham look to be playing on the counter. A good block by Robinson denies a chance but it is corner.

Corner comes in and there's a handball by Robinson, penalty.

Mitrovic steps up...and smashes it over the bar!!!

Long kick by Ramsdale, flicked on well by McBurnie and McGoldrick takes aim with a snapshot from distance which is just wide.

Fulham counter again and Norwood looks like he's impeded by the ref! It's four on two but Robinson makes a great clearance and it's a corner...

Lookman's delivery is headed over by Adarabioyo.

Debut for Rhian Brewster who replaces David McGoldrick.

United charge clear again as Brewster plays in Stevens but the cut back can't find Brewster and Fulham clear...

They counter themselves but Egan with a well-time last ditch clearance.

Collision here between Anguissa and Brewster. The latter is down, break in play...

Low Fulham cross into the near post, but there's Ramsdale, sprinting out to gather.

Lookman powers through two challenges, gets into the area and smashes it into the roof of the net.

Brilliant save by Ramsdale as Anguissa's cross is thundered towards goal by Mitrovic.

Fulham change as Loftus-Cheek is replaced by Mario Lemina.

United change as Billy Sharp replaces Chris Basham.

VAR checking a penalty on Robinson...

Penalty to the Blades has been given...

Sharp takes it...and fires it into the roof of the net!!!!!!!!!!!

Wonderful cross from Berge, Sharp connects, saved by the legs of Areola, offside flag raised anyway.

Lookman shot deflected wide, corner to Fulham...

Deep corner cleared by the Blades...

Lemina shoots from distance, deflected wide by Robinson. Corner cleared by McBurnie.

Returned and Mitrovic somehow heads wide a cross from Lookman from six yards.
