United exited the Carabao Cup at the third-round stage, following a frustrating evening at Bramall Lane against Sunderland.
Max Power netted the only goal of the game early in the first-half, as Sunderland advanced to the fourth round.
For the third-round clash, boss Wilder made ten changes from the starting XI at Everton, with only Robinson keeping his place. Jagielka wore the captain's armband, as Mousset was handed a first start following his second-half goal at Goodison Park.
United were quickly out of the blocks and Burge was called into action twice in less than a minute, first denying Robinson, before more comfortably saving from Luke Freeman. The Sunderland stopper than saved his side twice more after a Flanagan error, with Robinson and then Mousset denied in quick succession.
But on nine minutes it was the visitors who took the lead against the run of play, with their first attack. A corner was only cleared to the edge of the box, where POWER controlled and fired into the top corner, giving Moore little chance.
The game continued to ebb and flow, with both teams having chances. Moore was equal to Embleton's shot at one end, before Mousset was inches away from connecting with Robinson's low cross from the left. It was the Blades who were enjoying more of the ball and creating most, Morrison twisted and turned before having a shot save, prior to Luke Freeman firing wide from distance.
The Blades ended the first half on top, but again Burge was ideally positioned to deny Mousset who had found space in the box from Jagielka's pass forward.
In the early moments of the second period, it was Sunderland looking for a second, but thankfully O'Nien's effort hit the side netting from a tight angle, before Freeman had to be alert to clear from Maguire, after a slip by Stearman.
On 57 minutes, United made a double switch at the top of the pitch, with McBurnie and Clarke replacing Robinson and Mousset. The Blades final change saw Fleck introduced, with Bryan making way, appearing to be carrying a knock.
With the clocking ticking down, a number of decisions went against the Blades in quick succession, culminating in Fleck being yellow carded for a foul on McLauglin. A corner wasn't cleared properly, but from distance, Osborn's effort was saved by Burge.
Still the Blades pressed, looking for that elusive equaliser, but the visitors held firm, although Maguire was booked for blatant timewasting as three minutes added time were signaled and despite United's best efforts, they passed without incident meaning United exited the competition at the second hurdle.
