Chris Wilder was full of praise for skipper Billy Sharp, following his hat-trick in the victory over Wigan Athletic on Saturday.
Sharp took his tally for the season into double figures, as the Blades returned to top-spot in the Sky Bet Championship with the win over the Latics.
Wilder remarked: "We always ask Billy for that all-round performance and sometimes he can't give us when we play three games in a week.
"But he was nice and fresh, he's trained well all week and this is one of the things we're learning to do, we're plotting our way through this testing schedule.
"People will have looked at the game and thought it's a home banker, with Wigan's away record, but they came and had a go, playing with freedom.
"We dropped our standards a bit and that makes the game closer than it should have been."
The Blades boss added: "We now go to Forest and it's brilliant we go there top of the league and our aim now has to be to stay in the top two.
"The games are coming thick and fast and we have to be ready, players need to be ready to step in, like Richard Stearman did at the weekend."
