Richard Stearman believes United's strengthen in depth could be key to success this season.
The experienced defender featured in the 4-2 victory over Wigan Athletic last weekend and is hoping to be part of Chris Wilder's plans for this weekend's trip to Nottingham Forest.
He said: "From a playing point of view, I thought we did well last season, but we have more strength in depth now and can cope better with the rigours of Championship football. Hopefully that strength will come to fruition over the winter months.
"You need a good core of players to play the majority of games but where our strength might lie will be the ability to call on five, six or maybe more players who are Championship ready, being able to fill in when the regulars are sidelined, and helping us continue to pick up points.
"What we have done so far this season proves that last year was no fluke and now that we have a stronger squad we are hoping to hang around at the top longer this year."
