United's U23s picked up three points with a victory over a Burnley side featuring Republic of Ireland international Jonathan Walters on Good Friday afternoon.

A Tyler Smith goal in the second half was enough to secure the points at Stocksbridge.

The first goalkeeper to be tested would be Burnley's after 10 minutes as Doherty played in Smith with a great through ball and the forward forced a good low save with a driven shot.

A quick counter attack was the catalyst for United's next opportunity as Slater found Mallon with a cross field ball, he slipped in Smith but his effort was deflected just wide.

The visitors came very close to opening the scoring on the half hour when a cross to the back post was headed over from six yards out.

United broke the deadlock in unconventional circumstances 10 minutes after the restart as Slater's corner was fumbled by the goalkeeper leading to the ball bouncing off multiple players with SMITH getting the final touch.

Smith would have a great chance to double his tally moments later as Portman curled in a wonderful cross, but he headed wide.

The Clarets would come very close to finding an equaliser shortly after but veteran Walters directed his glancing header just wide of the post.

With 20 minutes to go United almost had the game wrapped up when Smith wriggled through but was kept out superbly by the goalkeeper one-on-one and the rebound would produce an even better save as the stopper flew across his goal to deny trialist Hutchinson.

Another United chance came as the game entered the final 10 minutes and it was Smith again as he carried the ball into the box, dropped his shoulder and forced another good save from the Burnley stopper.

Blades: Eastwood, Portman, Mallon, Cantrill, Doherty, Semple, Gilmour, Slater, Smith, Oure (Hutchinson 45), Parkhouse (Broadbent 66).
Unused: Weaver, Neal, Dewhurst.
