Chris Wilder says trialist David McGoldrick will be given another chance to impress at the weekend.
Speaking after watching the former Ipswich marksman complete 77 minutes of Tuesday's victory over Bradford City, Wilder revealed the door remains open for the free agent to earn a contract with United.
The manager commented: "David showed his obvious class. He is a player who has spent his career at the top end of the Championship.
"We're looking for quality and he showed a willing to come in on Monday and play as a trialist on Tuesday, so we'll have another look at him at Mansfield.
"I'm not a snob in terms of where I get my players and I thought his link-up play with Leon (Clarke) was excellent. His a technically gifted player who wants to come in and earn a contract and I'm not ruling anyone out.
"We've got an excellent group, but we need to improve, so we'll continue to assess things with David, who is comfortable with the situation and he hasn't done himself any harm."
Meanwhile, Wilder explained the reasoning by having former Bristol City stopper Luke Steele with his squad at the moment.
He added: "We're looking at Luke, who Darren Ward knows well and with Simon Moore currently injured with a thigh problem that's a concern."
