A crowd of 18,883 were in attendance at the Lane, as United and Inter shared the spoils.

David McGoldrick scored on his home debut for the Blades, hours after signing a one-year deal with United, but Mauro Icardi levelled proceedings before the interval for the visitors, finishing a sweeping counter attack.

For the clash against the Serie A giants, Wilder handed home debuts to his three summer additions, with Henderson, Egan and the aforementioned McGoldrick all starting.

In a game that was played in the right spirit throughout by both sides, Dalbert was substituted early on for the visitors following a block tackle with Lundstram.

United's first sight of goal saw Evans start and finish a lovely move, with his goal bound effort deflected wide for a corner.

And on 28 minutes, the Blades capped a positive start by opening the scoring. Stevens and Fleck worked some space on the left and the latter drove at the Inter defence before slipping in MCGOLDRICK who lifted the ball beautifully over the advancing Handanovic.

In United's next attack, Fleck almost went from provider to scorer as he flashed a dipping volley from distance inches wide of the post with Handanovic stranded.

But on 35 minutes, it was Inter who hit back. United lost the ball high up the pitch, but Martinez freed Candreva and he squared across the face of goal for ICARDI to knock into the empty net despite the best efforts of Basham and Egan.

Before the break, Inter could have taken the lead on two occasions, but Henderson was at his best to deny Icardi, before the Argentinian striker opted to tee up Roric instead of shooting when clean through.

The second-half was an open contest, with substitutions kept to a minimum and both sides clearly had the intention and ambition to try and win the game, despite goalscoring opportunities being at a premium.

In the final six minutes, kicking towards the Kop end, Sharp drew a fine save from Handanvoic, before Duffy curled an effort over from a promising position, as the game ended in stalemate.

Blades: Henderson (Moore 45), Baldock (Freeman 78), Stevens, Fleck, O'Connell, Basham, Lundstram (Duffy 61), Evans, Clarke (Sharp 78), Egan (Stearman 70), McGoldrick (Holmes 70).
Unused: Lavery, Norrington-Davies.
