George Baldock says there remains a genuine confidence and belief from within about United's prospects this season.
Speaking ahead of Saturday's trip to Reading, Baldock was in typically buoyant mood.
He commented: "We feel like on one of the top sides. When I walk out to play, I look around and not one part of me thinks we're going to get beat.
"There is a real confidence amongst the players, people talk about us punching above our weight, but in terms of quality we are right up there with the best in my opinion.
"We're just striving for that high level of consistency now and if we can find it, we'll continue winning more games than we lose."
The wing-back added: "Obviously I joined the club with expectations of the Championship, but as a team we managed to exceed them for much of last season.
"This year though we believe we've got a right chance and that comes from what we achieved last season, we've come back better players this following last season's experience of the division.
"There is a lot more to come, but we've won games already this season that we drew or lost last time. Brentford is the perfect example really, we managed to find a way to edge to victory, last season we dominated the game and only drew."
