Paul Coutts is set to feature for the Blades in a behind closed friendly next week, with boss Chris Wilder hoping the midfielder will be back in first-team contention by the end of next month.
Coutts could travel to Bolton on Saturday, but isn't under consideration, although Wilder has received a boost ahead of the trip to the north-west.
The manager remarked: "We have Mark Duffy back from illness, but it's too early for George (Baldock) and Kean (Bryan) isn't available for the weekend.
"Couttsy will play a game next week which is boost for all of us, it's brilliant for everyone. The supporters will be pleased and more importantly the players will get a boost, we took him to QPR and he took part in the warm-up."
On Coutts, Wilder added: "He is a big voice in that changing room and he's been excellent throughout his time out, he was bobbing out within a couple of weeks and seeing at full tilt in training means this is the next stage.
"He's now got to go through the clearance process, 30, 60, 75, then a full 90 minutes, so hopefully he's knocking on the door by the end of September.
"It's a cliché, but he will be like a new signing and I'm looking forward to having him at our disposal, I need to have different combinations of players available for selection to enable us flexibility in terms of formations.
"This is the Championship and we have to have players who can play different ways, in different shapes and most certainly Norwood, Fleck and Coutts are good enough players to combine together."
