Leeds 1-2 Blades - report

Yet another Yorkshire derby victory lifted the Blades to top of the Sky Bet Championship table on Friday evening.

David Brooks, with his first senior goal, won the encounter at Leeds United after skipper Billy Sharp had netted an early header.

Manager Wilder kept faith with the starting XI and substitutes that recorded a home victory over Reading last time out and the rewards were almost instant. Less than two minutes had elapsed when United attacked from a throw in on the right and from Duffy's cross, SHARP peeled off his marker at the back post to head home.

The early action, expectedly, was frantic with both sides hoping to exert their dominance. The Coutts/Fleck/Duffy triangle was heavily involved and the latter began a break on 10 minutes that saw Clarke get across his marker but divert the ball wide from six yards.

Leeds could only muster a couple of lofts into the box in the opening 20 minutes, whilst the Blades went close again when Duffy robbed Ayling but Baldock's effort was straight at goalkeeper Lonergan.

On 26 minutes, the Blades had another good chance to extend the lead. Clarke, free on the left, delivered a low centre and Sharp again beat his marker but this time Lonergan tipped over.

Leeds were clearly second best in the first half hour but got themselves back in the game with their first effort on target. Another loft into the box saw Carter-Vickers head clear as far as the edge of the box, where PHILLIPS was waiting to smash home an impressive volley.

It gave the home side impetus and they pressured the Blades for a spell but the last chance was another good opportunity for the visitors. From a quick Fleck free-kick, Sharp found himself in space but Lonergan was quickly off his line to block and smother the rebound.

An energetic start to the second half saw a lot of effort exerted but little in terms of chances until, on 57 minutes, a Saiz shot from outside the box cannoned off the left-hand post and strike Blackman on the rebound.

Goalscorer Phillips fluffed a free-kick and was fortunate not to see red for a rash challenge on Baldock soon after as the tempo remained high. The Blades won a number of corners and from a deep Duffy delivery, Clarke connected at the back post but Lonergan saved.

A Leeds break saw Alioski's header from Saiz's cross saved by Blackman, whilst the home side almost gifted the Blades a chance but Jansson saved Vieira's blushes following a careless back-pass.

Brooks replaced Sharp for the final 15 minutes - an inspired move. Lonergan saved from Clarke on 81 minutes but he could do little to prevent the Blades retaking the lead a minute later. Duffy broke through the middle and slid a perfect pass for BROOKS to place beyond the home goalkeeper for his first senior Blades goal.

Late on the game became a little feisty - both sides picking up bookings - but the Blades fans were in fine voice as the men in red and white controlled the closing stages. Five minutes of added time was announced but the only threat was the weakest of weak headers from Grot and a misplaced cross from Hernandez, which Blackman, on his 24th birthday, comfortably collected, along with three valuable points.
