United Ladies' SSE Womens' FA Cup adventure for this season came to an end with a first round proper defeat on Tyneside.
United boss Dan O'Hearne made three changes to his last starting XI, recalling Evie Robinson, Alex Hickerman and Tania Marsden.
United had an early blow when they lost leading goalscorer Nat Shaw through injury when she pulled a hamstring and is expected to be out for a couple of weeks. At the half-time whistle it was Newcastle taking a 1-0 lead in with them after a 42nd minute free-kick was deflected into the net off a Blades player.
The second half saw Newcastle go two ahead after 49 minutes through McKenzie and the game settled for sure eight minutes before the end with a third from Lyons with United chasing the game.
O'Hearne made no excuses: "The outcome was they were better than us on the day, plain and simple. "We are a new team in the Premier Division playing against established teams who have been at that level for years so it's work in progress and we are a lot healthier than we where we have been for the last few years."
The team can take some comfort when considering that this was only United's sixth loss in the calender year from their 29 games played.
Blades: Houldsworth, Robinson, Neary, Froggatt, Hartley, Bell, Spurr, Hickerman, Pearson, Shaw, Marsden. Subs: Marshall, Barker, Kenyon.
On Sunday fourth place United return to league action with a home fixture with fifth placed Radcliffe Olympic.
