Caolan Lavery is on the road to recovery and close to adding to Chris Wilder's attacking options.
The striker played 90 minutes in a behind-closed-doors friendly at Bramall Lane on Tuesday, wearing a specially-fitted mask to protect his face.
He has been out of action since August following a clash of heads in the victory over Derby County, which required hospital treatment.
He said: "The club got a mask fitted for my face, it is comfy, but it took a little getting used to, little knocks and pushes from behind. The first bit I did on the grass again I was aware of it because of the nerve damage around but my face but I'm confident with it on now.
"I cannot thank the club and hospitals enough for the medical support I've had."
