Lane's big night of boxing

28 May 2017

A spectacular night of world championship boxing at Bramall Lane ultimately ended in disappointment for the hometown hero.

In front of a crowd of around 27,000 inside United's home, Kell Brook lost his IBF world crown in a tremendously entertaining bout with unbeaten American Errol Spence Jr.

It was the headline event on an impressive Matchroom Boxing show, which was shown live on Sky Sports Box Office and after a brave display, Brook's night was ended in the 11th round with an eye problem.

Kell said afterwards: "It was a very tough fight. Spence is one of the best kids I've been in with. It was a very competitive fight.

"I got caught in the eye, I couldn't see. I had to stop. I live to fight another day but I'm gutted I've lost my belt in front of my fans in Sheffield. I'm devastated."

New champion Spence Jr added: "I'd like to thank the fans for coming out. Kell Brook is a strong, fast fighter and he congratulated me after the fight. There is a respect between us. The atmosphere was awesome, the fans came to support their guy and I attempted to use that as a positive."

George Groves won the WBA world super middleweight title and a number of former Olympians starred on the bill, which was watched by Blades boss Chris Wilder.

Promoter Eddie Hearn, who worked closely with United to put on the show, added: "Kell was taken to hospital after the fight but no excuses, he was beaten by the better man."
