Season Review - January 2017

6 June 2017

Our season review enters 2017 and with the Blades top of the tree, Chris Wilder's side were in no mood to drop from the summit.

After four wins from as many matches to end 2016, a quickfire double in the first week of January kept United firmly on course for promotion.

Despite falling behind against Bury at Gigg Lane, goals from Billy Sharp and Kieron Freeman, either side of an own-goal saw the Blades leave Lancashire with the spoils.

And five days later United produced arguably their best performance of the campaign to down high-flying Southend 4-2 in a rearranged fixture at Roots Hall.

Ethan Ebanks-Landell and Jack O'Connell netted in the first-half, before goals from Kieron Freeman and Caolan Lavery made sure of the points, to cap an impressive display in Essex.

Somewhat surprisingly, that was United's last victory of the month. Bogey side Walsall inflicted a third loss on the Blades in all competitions, winning 4-1 at the Banks-s Stadium, prior to Gillingham earning a share of the spoils a week later.

And January ended with a sixth and final loss of the campaign as Fleetwood produced an excellent performance at the Lane to leave 2-0 victors.
