Season Review - April 2017

9 June 2017

The finishing line was there entering April and United powered over it before going on to make history.

Bottom of the league Coventry offered some resistance, but second-half goals from former Sky Blues Leon Clarke and John Fleck saw United move within a point of promotion, prompting Chris Wilder to celebrate with a 'Klinsmann' following Fleck's strike.

The day Blades fans had waited six years for came on the 8th April 2017. Northampton at Sixfields will go down in history, just like Darlington and Leicester have for previous generations. Despite falling behind in the first-half, goals from Clarke and Fleck ensured the champagne that had been on iced could be enjoyed long into night.

A routine 3-0 victory at Port Vale kept the Blades on course for 100 points entering the final three games of the season and Bradford were simply blown away in the first-half of the televised Easter Monday clash as the Lane celebrated being Champions following Bolton's loss at Oldham on the Saturday.

Billy Sharp stole the show in the 3-0 win at the MK Dons, scoring his 200th and 201st career goal as over 7,000 Blades created a carnival atmosphere at stadium:mk.

That set things up perfectly for United to be officially crowned Champions in front of a sold out Bramall Lane and in the process end the season on a record breaking 100 point tally, something that was confirmed as Daniel Lafferty scored the winning goal to beat relegated Chesterfield 3-2.
