Boss Chris Wilder was pleased to see United overcome Chesterfield at the Proact Stadium on Tuesday evening.
Second-half goals from Jack O'Connell and substitute David Brooks saw the Blades recover from going behind to a first-half Chris O'Grady goal.
And Wilder felt the clash against the Spireites was just what his side needed at this stage of pre-season.
The manager remarked: "It was a realistic, proper football match, which is exactly what we wanted.
"It was a local game, there was a lot of pride involved obviously and we fell behind despite having two or three chances to take the lead.
"The goal gave Chesterfield a lift, they wanted to win and so did we and I'm delighted we did."
On the contributions of his two goalscorers, Wilder added: "Jack gives the team a driving force. I was pleased with the character and attitude of the players, we don't like getting turned over regardless of the fact it's a friendly.
"David's done what we expect him to do and what he's shown over the last few months.
"If he carries on performing the way he is then he will continue to be involved, he has to work even harder now to ensure he continues to push on."
