Chris Wilder has added to the options at his disposal, with the loan signing of a youngster from Manchester United.
Joe Riley, who can operate in both defence and midfield, has joined the Blades from the Red Devils until the end of the season and could make his debut against Gillingham in Sky Bet EFL League One on Saturday. He signed the paperwork on his deal on Tuesday morning.
The 20-year-old, who has been at Old Trafford since July 2013, completed 85 minutes on his comeback from injury for Manchester United's second string at Liverpool on Monday, which in turn gave the Blades the green light to complete the deal.
Primarily a right-sided midfielder at youth-team level, Riley forced his way into the U21s side as a left-back and has never looked back, making his first-team debut against Shrewsbury Town in the FA Cup fifth round last season, coming on as a substitute.
Known for his tenaciousness and energy, Riley's addition to the United ranks will give boss Wilder further depth and options to his squad during the second half of the campaign.
Of Riley's signing, Wilder remarked: "Joe is a young player who is comfortable playing on both the right or left and that versatility will be important to us. We are delighted to have him with us for the remainder of the season and happy that Manchester United have allowed him to further his development here."
Already in this January transfer window United have brought in Samir Carruthers and secured the services of Ethan Ebanks-Landell and Daniel Lafferty.
