United went top of the league after another well-earned three points at Nettleham.
This was the first time all season United been top mainly due to having three good cup runs, allowing rivals Mansfield Town to lead for most of the season. That lead was finally overhauled and United are now clear favourites to clinch the title with four games remaining.
United got off to a flying start with the opening goal in the second minute. Tania Marsden broke down the right and crossed to the far post where Jen Pearson arrived unmarked to cushion the ball into Nettleham's net. Marsden again used her strength to break through the defence after 10 minutes and unleash a near unstoppable shot to make it 2-0.
As it turned out that was the end of the scoring. The game ebbed and flowed thereafter without either goalkeeper having much to save. United had to work hard all game to keep the advantage. Nettleham were lively but lacked a cutting edge and the United defence were able to once again keep a clean sheet, the 13th of the season.
United had more of the possession in the second half and Sophie Bell went closest of all to adding the score when she struck the crossbar soon after the restart. Despite efforts the score remained 2-0 and United were delighted at the end to have got the three points to go top.
