United Ladies 5-0 Mansfield Hosiery Mills - report

28 September 2016

United returned to league action after two successful cup games with a midweek home game against Mansfield Hosiery Mills.

United were without three regulars but were boosted by a double debut for new strikers Annalise Carroll and Italian-born Melissa Celi and went with a positive 3-5-2 formation for this game.

Celi got United off to a perfect start after nine minutes with a confident shot over the goalkeeper from outside of the box to make it 1-0. Further shots from Celi, Carroll and the ever creative Sophie Bell kept Mansfield 'keeper Kate Wojnar on her toes.

United then had a scare when 'keeper Kirsty Johnson pulled up after intercepting a through ball. Her clearance falling to a Mansfield player whose long range shot went narrowly wide of the unguarded net. Still walking gingerly after spraining her foot, Johnson made a vital save a few minutes later pushing the ball into the path of a Mansfield forward who was flagged for having already been offside.

Thereafter the United defence protected their goalkeeper very well, captain Rosa Neary particulary outstanding.

It was unfortunate for Mansfield that after withstanding United's subsequent attacks they conspired to gift the Blades a soft own goal to go 2-0 behind. No help was needed for the third goal, though, on 43 minutes as Celi did it again with a replica of her opening goal from outside the box to take United into the break fairly comfortably ahead.

United continued to press into the second half, Carroll going close with a header. The fourth goal came 53 minutes in and was another quality goal. Kim Brown's diagonal ball over the defence was superbly finished by Alex Hickerman.

Mansfield showed a lot of fight and frustrated but fresh United legs kept the pressure on and in the last minute Cara Hopkinson, having been released from defensive duties, found space to slot in goal number five.

Blades: Johnson, Cawthorn, Neary, Hopkinson, Bell, Hickerman (Wainwright), Ruddach, Brown, Darbyshire (Hall), Celi, Carroll (Smith).
