Halifax 1-5 U18s - report

16 November 2016

United cruised to victory in the second round of the FA Youth Cup on Wednesday evening.

With Chris Wilder an interested onlooker, the young Blades dominated at The Shay and goals from Keegan Burton, Callum Semple, Tyler Smith, Sam Graham and David Parkhouse booked a safe passage into the third round, where a trip to Preston North End awaits.

At Halifax, it took the Blades just 25 seconds to register a chance and the home side were fortunate to remain level when Hallam fired against the crossbar after Smith headed a Mallon cross back into the danger area.

Basic could not find the target for Halifax but United dominated the first half with wingers Mallon and Smith seeing plenty of the ball. Strikers Burton and Hallam both had chances before the visitors took the lead on 23 minutes.

Captain Slater's break from midfield created holes and although goalkeeper Trenerry got a touch to Smith's shot, BURTON was ideally-placed to prod home the loose ball.

There were chances to extend the lead before the break but Mallon poked wide when in the clear and Smith's shot was deflected wide by the home goalkeeper.

Two further goals in the opening six minutes of the second half then confirmed United's dominance. On 49 minutes, from Hallam's free-kick, SEMPLE headed against a post but converted the rebound from close range and then a superb cross field pass from Mallon set up SMITH, who took a neat touch before beating Trenerry.

Burton then had the ball in the net but he was adjudged offside before the home side pulled a goal back on 62 minutes. Substitute Cham's effort came back off the woodwork and SWALES rammed the rebound into the roof of the net.

The Blades were barely threatened, though, and the three-goal cushion was restored on 72 minutes when defender GRAHAM rose to head home a corner from Hallam.

Smith set up chances for Greaves and Hallam but both failed to find the target, but there was one last goal for the Blades in injury-time when substitute PARKHOUSE headed home Hallam's cross at the back post, much to the delight of coaches Derek Geary and Travis Binnion.

Blades: Perryman, Charlesworth, Cantrill, Gilmour (Ford 73), Graham, Semple, Smith, Slater, Burton (Parkhouse 79), Hallam, Mallon (Greaves 68).
Unused: Cummings, Warhurst.
