Blades 0-2 Scunthorpe - report
The Blades 2015/16 Sky Bet League One season ended in frustration and disappointment at Bramall Lane on Sunday lunchtime.
A goal in each half from Tom Hopper and Paddy Madden saw play-off hopefuls Scunthorpe run out comfortable winners in South Yorkshire, but the Iron miss out on the top six on goal difference as United end the season in 11th position.
Boss Adkins made two changes for the final encounter of the season. Martyn Woolford and Dean Hammond returned, replacing the injured Ryan Flynn and Ben Whiteman, who dropped to the bench.
In glorious sunshine, United started brightly and had the first sight of goal. After Coutts had worked had to win a corner on the right, a combination of Edgar and Baptiste got the better of Mirfin in the air but the ball deflected wide of Daniels's post. Then in the next attack Townsend produced a timely blocked to deny Basham after the Iron failed to deal with Woolford's left-wing cross.
The heat appeared to be affecting the pace with neither side able to get a real grip of proceedings, but in the 28th the game almost burst into life and the Blades were within inches of going in front. Sharp, from a throw-in, combined nicely with Coutts on the edge of the area, but with Daniels stranded United's leading marksman fired narrowly wide of the target.
The game did come to life with little over six minutes remaining of the first period though it was the visitors who were celebrating. Hammond's misplaced pass gave possession away and despite the best efforts of Baptiste and Long to deny Madden, the ball broke kindly for HOPPER to slot home past McEveley on the line. Adelakun then tested Long from distance, before Coutts was booked for bringing down Williams.
At half-time, Adkins made a change with Whiteman replacing Hammond. The first action of the second-half saw Sharp sting the palms of Daniels. The second change for the Blades saw Cuvelier take the place of Woolford. In the 64th minute, the Blades fell further behind. A throw-in from McEveley saw Coutts robbed of possession by Williams, who tied up MADDEN, to score with the aid of a deflection off Baptiste.
United looked for an instant response and a way back into the game, but Adams headed wide from close range from a near post corner by Coutts, the aforementioned midfielder was then replaced by Reed. The Blades continued to press forward and from Basham's knock down Sharp just couldn't get in front of Mirfin with the goal at his mercy.
Scunthorpe seemed to content to settle for a point as the game petered out. Baptiste headed over from a Reed corner, whilst in reply Madden saw a header saved by Long from Hopper's centre, but the flag was up in any case. For a third time during the second-half, Whiteman saw a shot go narrowly wide of the target.
Three minutes of added time were signalled on what was a disappointing afternoon end to the 2015/16 campaign.
