Speaking ahead of Burton Albion arriving at Bramall Lane on Tuesday night, Nigel Adkins says the Blades must continue to fight hard in pursuit of a play-off place.
United enter the midweek clash against the league leaders, now managed by former Blades chief Nigel Clough, in 10th position in Sky Bet League One, four points adrift of sixth spot.
But the Gaffer is remaining optimistic about his team's hopes. He remarked: "We always look forward not back and the next challenge is Burton, who are having a tremendous season.
"But this isn't about an old manager returning, this is about us going out there and trying to beat the team that are deservedly top of the pile at the present time.
"Burton have carried on the momentum from last season, they know their strengths, they have got a good sized settled squad and they make themselves very difficult to beat.
"They have an excellent defensive record and that is credit to the hardwork they put in, but for us it is about finding a formula to go out there and break them down."
Adkins added: "We need wins, a good number of them if we are to get into the top six, so the emphasis will be on us to attack and that's what we will do, but we have to be patient too.
"We want to play quickly and forward, but it might be that we also have to go backwards and sideways first if Burton come and sit deep."
