Help Sheffield health project win National Lottery funding

7 July 2016

A city healthy-living initiative has been nominated for a National Lottery award and is calling on the people of Sheffield to help it win!

The SIV, Sheffield United and Sheffield Wednesday 'Steel City Fit Club' is battling it out with six other organisations from across the UK to be named Best Sport Project after reaching the finals of the prestigious National Lottery Awards.

The innovative project beat off stiff competition from more than 600 applicants to reach the voting stage in this year's National Lottery Awards and the chance to win £3,000.

The winner will also receive a National Lottery Awards trophy and attend a star-studded awards ceremony hosted by TV actor John Barrowman in London, broadcast on BBC One in September.

The National Lottery-funded Steel City Fit Club harnesses the power of football by offering local football supporters the chance to get fit and have fun in the grounds of their footballing heroes.

Over 12 weeks, participants take part in low-impact, football-related fitness sessions run in partnership with Sheffield United Community Foundation and Sheffield Wednesday Community Trust at Bramall Lane and Hillsborough football grounds.

They also take part in fun and engaging education sessions which are designed to teach them how to lead a healthy lifestyle and maintain their fitness upon completion of the course.

Each person who takes part also receives a free SIV lifeCARD, enabling them to save money on health and fitness-related activities around Sheffield.

SIV is part of the not-for-profit Sheffield City Trust (SCT) whose primary objective is to improve the health and wellbeing of Sheffield people by providing facilities for sport and leisure activities.

Rob Womack, Healthy Partnerships Manager at Sheffield City Trust said: "We are extremely proud to have reached the finals of The National Lottery Awards and it would be fantastic to see the people of Sheffield get behind us and vote for Steel City Fit Club to win this prestigious accolade.

"This unique programme is using the power of football and the passion of Sheffield football fans to help people who wouldn't normally be very active to push themselves to get fit and continue being active long after the sessions have finished. We have seen people lose weight, reduce their blood pressure and more importantly people are happier and more social having created new through the project!

"Steel City FC brings together two great footballing rivals for one common goal - to improve the health and wellbeing of Sheffield people through 'Moving More'. The programme makes such a life-changing difference to those who take part and it would be a tremendous honour for their hard work and dedication to be recognised. So Sheffield, please vote for us and make us a winner!"

The programme has so far engaged 130 inactive male and female participants from across Sheffield.

Nearly 9 out of 10 people complete the 12 weeks of activity and have recorded reductions in blood pressure, weight, BMI and resting heart rate. Some participants have stopped smoking.

Sheffield United fan Nicky Nunn, 45, said: "Not only has the programme benefitted my physical health and wellbeing, but the classroom sessions were informative and interesting - and it's a brilliant that the club is being staged at Bramall Lane."
