Brayford urges Blades to kick on

12 January 2016

John Brayford says the Blades must now kick on in Sky Bet League One after impressing against Manchester United at Old Trafford in the Emirates FA Cup at the weekend.

Nigel Adkins saw his side push Louis van Gaal's men all the way on Saturday, only succumbing to a stoppage-time penalty from England skipper Wayne Rooney and Brayford insists the standard of performance, particularly from a defensive point of view must now be replicated consistently in the league, starting at Wigan Athletic on Tuesday.

The popular defender remarked: "We were excellent at the weekend; we defended as a team, kept our shape and never really looked like being broken down.

"Now there can be no excuses in the league because we have to produce that kind of display week in week out, if we do we will win a lot of matches because at our own level we will always score goals.

"There is a real confidence in the camp despite the last two defeats, but now it is time for the talking to stop and the actions to speak for themselves.

"We need a good run to get amongst the pack this month as we look to make up ground on the top two."

Looking ahead to the trip to the DW Stadium, Brayford is refusing to concede that Wigan will have the advantage having had more recovery time than the Blades following their last fixture, a 3-2 home win over high flying Gillingham.

He added: "Yes they played last Thursday and we kicked off late on Saturday evening, but we will have recovered come Tuesday night and we will be ready for the challenge they will pose.

"It is pointless worrying about the things we can't control, there were a few stiff bodies in training on Monday but we are used to playing Saturday and Tuesday throughout much of the season and once that whistle goes we will be fully committed to getting a positive result."
