Nigel Adkins felt the Blades deserved all three points from Saturday's Sky Bet League One clash against promotion chasing Gillingham at Bramall Lane.
Despite dominating the game for long periods, creating numerous chances, hitting the woodwork and having a penalty appeal waved away, United were forced to settle for a share of the spoils against Just Edinburgh's resolute Gills, but the Blades boss was encouraged by what he saw from his players.
He remarked: "I thought we played well and it was exciting. The fans reaction at the end of the game was pleasing too; they clearly appreciated the effort and endeavour of the lads.
"We worked extremely hard and enjoyed a lot of the ball, we created chances and were positive, hopefully that's something we can produce more consistently moving forward.
"On another day, we could have won the game by several goals. We needed to win the game rather than take a point, but we should be positive looking into the future with the manner of the performance."
Adkins added: "Obviously in our position we need wins, but all we can do is look to win the next game, which is a local derby at Chesterfield, that's now our focus.
"We hit the crossbar in the first minute, it's about such fine margins, but we'll continue to work hard and strive to improve."
