Ipswich 4-1 U18s - report

28 September 2015

United's youngsters slipped to defeat in Suffolk on Saturday, as missed chances and poor defending proved costly.

That was despite defender Callum Semple giving the visitors an early lead, only for the Tractor Boys to net four times without further reply.

United got off to the perfect start after just five minutes as SEMPLE reacted quickest in the box after Cummings had powered a header against the crossbar from Hallam's inswinging corner.

It was an open game throughout and after Ramsdale made a couple of good saves, Slew made the Town goalkeeper work from a tight angle, before the United striker failed to apply the finishing touch after Gilmour's free-kick wasn't cleared properly.

During the opening half hour the Blades had looked comfortable, but a disappointing end to the first-half saw Ipswich score twice, the first coming from a short corner despite the best efforts of Ramsdale, prior to an excellent passing move for the second.

Before the break, Gordon struck just over from long-range following neat interchange play involving Smith, Slew and Hallam and with the final action of the opening 45 minutes, Maw fired his shot too high from Semple's defence splitting pass.

Missed chances for the Blades were again the difference after the interval too, after Slew raced on to Hallam's through ball before being denied by the home goalkeeper, Town extended their lead with a free header in the 48th minute.

Ramsey was introduced from the bench and on the hour Semple hit the bar, before Maw should have scored after excellent work from Gordon and Smith.

As United chased the game, Litchfield was thrown on in place of Maw and a couple of sights of goal, prior to Ipswich making sure of the win by scoring a fourth on the counter attack.

The Blades battled on gamely before falling to a third away defeat of the season, although two successive home games, gives United a chance to extend their 100% start to the campaign at the Steel Phalt Academy at Shirecliffe in the next fortnight.

Blades: Ramsdale, Charlesworth, Brown, Gilmour, Cummings, Semple, Maw (Litchfield 64), Gordon, Slew (Burton 76), Hallam (Ramsey 58), Smith.
Unused: Graham, Ford.
