United will play Reading in the third round of the FA Youth Cup, after a deserved success over Chesterfield at the Proact Stadium on Tuesday evening.
Having gone in front just after the half hour courtesy of an own-goal, second-half strikes from Stephen Mallon and Jordan Hallam ensured the Blades ran out worthy winners in Derbyshire to set up a trip to the Madejski Stadium.
The Spireites were quickly on the back foot as the visitors hit the post inside two minutes through Maw and the Blades continued to cause the home defence problems in the opening exchanges with Hallam the main threat.
Although the hosts look lively on the counter attack, Charlesworth fired narrowly over for United, before the young Blades took the lead in the 33rd minute. From Gilmour's inswinging corner Randle could only divert the ball into his own net under heavy pressure.
At the other end, Cummings and Semple had to make timely last-ditch challenges to preserve the advantage, before Ramsdale produced an excellent fingertip save to deny the Spireites a leveller on the stroke of half-time.
And those interventions at one end were built up on at the other as MALLON scored with a lovely controlled finish within a minute of the restart to give the Blades a two-goal cushion.
This saw United really take the game by the scruff of the neck with Hallam and Litchfield going close to adding a third, as did Semple and Gordon with headers.
Ramsdale continued to frustrate Chesterfield and made a smart save with his legs, prior to HALLAM wrapping up the victory with five minutes remaining. A brilliant run out of defence from Cummings got United moving forward and the aforementioned forward rounded the goalkeeper expertly before sliding into the empty net to cap a fine night for the youngsters.
The details of the third round clash against the Royals will be released in due course.
