Gaffer delighted with midweek success

25 March 2015

Nigel Clough was understandably delighted with the Blades resounding 4-0 victory over Scunthorpe United at Bramall Lane on Tuesday night.

Jason Holt, with his first goal for the Blades got the ball rolling, before Jose Baxter tucked away a couple of penalties, either side of Jamie Murphy's well taken effort.

But it was the performance of his players, not just the three points, that caught the eye of the Blades boss, he remarked:

"It was our best performance for two or three months, it was convincing and although the three points are important that display will certainly have a positive effect on our confidence.

"We have been asking the players to get on the front foot from the start and stay positive, sometimes that is difficult when we are edgy and nervous, but from the first minute we were dominant.

"Once we got into our stride it was one-way traffic. At half-time we told the players not to give them any encouragement, but at the same time keep attacking and get more goals. It was one of those games when we looked like scoring each time we attacked."

The Gaffer added: "The new players are settling in nicely, Brayford and Basham are looking good together, the midfield three were the best they have been and having Flynny back gave us a big lift.

"With Ryan on one side and Jamie (Murphy) on the other we have that balance and Steven Davies was excellent again up top.

"Steven hasn't scored yet, but that doesn't bother us at all, his all round play has been fantastic and he is contributing to others scoring.

"This win on the back of Saturday's doesn't give the teams chasing us any encouragement and that's important, if we are winning games then they know they pretty much have to win all their remaining fixtures to have any chance of catching us."‚Äč
