Conor Sammon is treating his Blades loan as a season-long audition.
The powerful Irish striker arrived at Bramall Lane over the weekend as part of a double striker swoop that also saw Billy Sharp become a Blade once more.
Republic of Ireland international Sammon, 28, made his debut as a second half substitute in Sunday's pre-season friendly with Newcastle United and later said: "It is a season-long audition for me - I need to impress to earn a new deal, hopefully here, if we are successful and I score goals, it would be a good scenario for me at the end of the season when I'm looking for a new deal.
"I know I'm here for the long run, I'll settle in and get stuck into training and hopefully when we play Gillingham I will hit the ground running.
"I'm at a stage of my career that I need to playing games regularly and when a Club with the ambition of Sheffield United shows interest in me, I'm just delighted to get it sorted quickly and it was a bonus to be involved in a game straight away."
