Blades 2-2 Newcastle - report

26 July 2015

The Blades matched Premiership Newcastle United in Sunday's Chris Morgan Testimonial at Bramall Lane.

The game was competitive for 87 minutes when Morgan was introduced for one last cameo - he also had a chance to win in.

Georgino Wijnaldum opened the scoring for Newcastle before Marc McNulty levelled. Siem De Jong restored the lead but a world-class effort from Kieran Freeman earned United a deserved draw.

New loan capture Sammon was on the Blades bench, but Sharp was not involved following his transfer from Leeds less than 24 hours earlier. Morgan himself was also amongst the substitutes.

It took Newcastle less than 90 seconds to attack, Cisse's effort rattled against Long's right post, whilst Wijnaldum curled just wide soon after. The Blades also had chances in the opening 20 minutes, Woolford was off target after Adams laid off Murphy's cross and Adams was crowded out by Janmaat after McNulty's through ball.

McNulty fired into the side-netting after Baxter's free-kick spun off the wall and the home side's impressive first half display saw Adams twice go close. Firstly, he fired over after Murphy beat Janmaat and then the young striker released a powerful effort which Krul just managed to turn around the post.

However, the final chance of the half brought a goal... for the visitors. A back-pass put Long under pressure and although he kept out Cisse, the ball broke for WIJNALDUM to slide home.

Being behind at the break was perhaps harsh after the home side's efforts, but the balance was restored two minutes into the second half. The offside trap was broken with Adams laying through to McNULTY, who slotted through the legs of the onrushing Krul.

Just before the hour the substitutions began with Sammon on for his debut and Done's first appearance of pre-season and the latter was quickly in the action, he lifted over Krul but Taylor headed clear.

The Blades continued to hold their own against the Premiership side, until a corner on 78 minutes. Colback delivered from the left, Cisse flicked on and DE JONG lost his marker at the back post to beat Long.

The anticipated arrival of Chris Morgan materialised on 87 minutes, but not before the goal of the game! A controlled half volley from FREEMAN from fully 25 yards saw Krul get a hand to ball but he could not keep it out.

Morgan took the armband and got a playful red card from referee Andrew Madley, but was able to continue!

There was a late appeal for a penalty from the away fans and Williamson could have been sent off in a league game for a foul on Sammon, which saw Morgan take the free-kick from the edge of the box - the effort hit the wall and was the last notable action, before Morgan took to the mic after the game.
