Gaffer on Spurs

21 January 2015

Nigel Clough insists his players will go to White Hart Lane on Wednesday night 'to embrace' the challenge posed by Tottenham Hotspur in the first-leg of their Capital One Cup semi-final tie.

The Blades boss is well aware of the quality and ability in Tottenham's ranks, but is confident the Blades can cause the home side problems of their own at the other end of the field.

Looking ahead to the fixture, Clough remarked: "There are areas where we'd like to think we can give them plenty to think about. Take them out of their comfort zone and pose different problems.

"For example, we usually play with a lot of width which you don't often see in the Premier League these days. We normally go out there with two out and out wingers although we might do something different here, you never know.

"Looking back at our game against Southampton, Marc McNulty caused their defence so many problems by scampering on and hunting down a series of little flicked balls through from Michael Doyle in midfield. That's the type of pass you rarely see at that level anymore.

"We know Spurs will have seen that and be aware of it, equally though, we have seen plenty of them too."

Clough added: "Without doubt, they have the quality to hurt us. They have the quality to hurt anyone in the country and probably in Europe too on their day.

"We don't fear the challenge, though. We'll embrace it and look forward to it."
