United can confirm that the contract of Stephen McGinn has been cancelled by mutual consent.
The midfielder had joined SPL outfit Dundee on-loan for the rest of the season on Friday and subsequently made his debut for The Dees in their 1-1 draw with Hamilton at the weekend.
The 26-year-old featured four times for United this season, starting two Capital One Cup fixtures and two Johnstone's Paint Trophy ties.
In total, McGinn, who was signed by former boss David Weir on a free transfer from Watford in the summer of 2013, made 42 appearances for the Blades, 32 of which were starts.
Blades chief Nigel Clough commented: "Stephen is a fantastic person and despite not playing a lot this season he has been a model professional, we wish him well in the next stages of his career."
