Sheffield United Football Club has always prided itself on being a Club that has retained strong links with those who represented it on the pitch long after they have left, as well as keeping in contact with the wives and families of those who are no longer with us.
This manifested itself none more so than at the Club's 125 anniversary celebrations last year, where a number of former players and family came together through the common bond of Sheffield United.
As a result, the Club has spent the last few months re-invigorating its Former Players Association, with it now set up as a Trust to enable its fundraising to have the maximum effect - part of which will be allocated to a benevolent and crisis fund for former players.
It will also act as a bridge between members and associated groups such as the Professional Footballers Association for advice and assistance. A database of all members contact details will be updated as the FPA grows.
Chris Morgan has accepted the inaugural role of Chairman, one that will last two years before the election of a successor after which he will become a life president. Chris will work with colleagues from the Association and in conjunction with Club Liaison Officer, John Garrett.
Over the coming weeks a committee will be appointed that will co-ordinate and run the project and all members will be gleaned from the Association itself.
"It is a real honour to be asked to chair the committee in this, my testimonial year," said Morgan.
"I make no secret of my love of Sheffield United and the pride that I have felt over the years being connected to such a historic and special Club. It is my aim to connect players not just from the United of today and my era but from as far back as we can go. It is important to feel a part of the family at all times and we will have regular meetings and gatherings as well as issuing a newsletter keeping all informed of Life at the Lane."
It is envisaged that one of the first events will be a 10th anniversary reunion of the promotion team that took the Club back to the Premier League under the guidance of Neil Warnock.
More information will come as the Association progresses over the coming months.
