Birmingham 3-5 U18s - report

20 April 2015

United U18s ended the season by edging an eight-goal thriller against Birmingham City on Saturday, to finish the campaign with consecutive wins, following last week's success over Swansea City.

Jonathan Helm bagged a first-half brace, whilst Danny Ramsey scored either side of the interval, with Tyler Smith also on target for the Blades.

The visitors opened the scoring with their first attack inside two minutes. Kelly played an excellent long pass into the path of the advancing HELM who cut inside before curling home from just outside the penalty area.

Birmingham hit back midway through the first-half with two goals in as many minutes, although the Blades contributed to their own downfall on both occasions.

United refused to sit back though and scored twice in four minutes themselves, despite losing Daniel Cockerline to an ankle injury. Just after the half hour, SMITH finished well from inside the area, before HELM headed home unmarked at the back post following good work between Brooks, Ramsey and Gordon moments later.

The Blades rounded off a pulsating opening 45 minuted by scoring again to go 4-2 up, this time RAMSEY finished off more good work from the influential Brooks.

The home side started the second-half brightly, but United look a constant threat going forward. Charlesworth replaced Gilmour just after the hour and the substitute claimed an assist as RAMSEY smashed home from 12 yards out to put the Blades further in front.

Birmingham responded by throwing caution to the wind and they got one back when Kelly made a hash of his attempted clearance. An interesting finish followed but the Blades withstood plenty of late pressure and had a let off when the Blues were denied what appeared to be a good shout for a penalty.

Blades: Ramsdale, Helm, Brown, Gilmour (Charlesworth 66), Adebowale, Kelly, Brooks, Gordon, Cockerline (Slew 34), Smith, Fusco (Ramsey 29).
Unused: Perryman, Cummings.
