Swansea 2-2 U21s - report

23 September 2014

United's U21s were denied an impressive win late on against Swansea City at Landore on Monday evening.

The Blades twice led in the first-half through Diego De Girolamo and Julian Banton, only to be pegged back on both occasions with Henry Jones and Ryan Hedges on target for the Swans.

The second equaliser came four minutes from time to cruelly deny United a first victory of the season.

The home side started brightly and should have taken the lead in the fifth minute, Sheehan freed Shepherd and his cross found King, who headed over with the goal at his mercy.

Henry Jones then fired a free-kick wide, before the Blades caught Swansea out with a swift counter attack to take the lead, with DE GIROLAMO producing an excellent lobbed effort over the advancing Davies.

However the lead last just four minutes as the hosts responded positively. Barrow crafted an opportunity down the right and from his pull back JONES swept the ball home from inside the six yard box.

The lively De Girolamo twice went close to getting his second and restoring the Blades advantage, only to be denied on both occasions by Davies.

United weren't to be stopped though and before half-time they did score again. Whiteman's inswinging corner from the left was cleverly steered home by defender BANTON.

The visitors clearly buoyed by scoring just before the break, were quickly out of the traps in the second-half with Coustrain coming close to adding a third on two occasions in quick succession.

All three points looked to heading back to Sheffield, until the introduction of HEDGES in the 85th minute. Within 60 seconds of his arrival on to the pitch the home striker applied the finish touch after good work by Jones.

The hosts were now sensing victory and they nearly grabbed it in injury-time, but Berry cleared off the line to deny substitute Hedges.

Blades: Willis, Paling, Scarisbrick, Dimaio, Banton, Berry, Khan, Whiteman, McDonagh, De Girolamo (Cockerline 89), Coustrain (Hamilton 72).
Unused: Eastwood, Evans.
