Nigel Clough believes the Blades have a defender at the top of his game at the present time.
The defender in question is Jay McEveley, who Clough reckons is current at the 'peak' of his career, having experienced playing for Blackburn Rovers, Derby County, Barnsley and Swindon Town on a permanent basis.
Of the 29-year-old, the Gaffer remarked: "Jay is assured and composed and is probably at the peak of his career now, not physically, but in terms of the knowledge and experience he has learnt over the last 10 years or so.
"He also seems to be thriving playing with the extra responsibility at centre-half, he is more than competent and competes well, and he'll be staying there for us moving forward.
"We played him there at Derby for a short time, he is versatile and knows what is required from each position now, but at the moment playing where he does also offers us balance within the back four.
"We like our full-backs to bomb on where possible, so we have also told him it saves his legs too!"
On his defence in general, Clough added: "Apart from conceding twice from set-pieces recently, they are the only goals we have conceded in the last five matches, so defensively, in open play we are looking particularly strong and long may that continue.
"Chris Basham also looks very accomplished at centre-half; we think he has all the attributes to be an excellent centre-half."
