Gaffer keen for more cup success

7 November 2014

Blades boss Nigel Clough wants to see his players do all they can to repeat last season's FA Cup heroics when the world's most famous knockout competition returns to the Blades schedule at the weekend.

United, who have already progressed to the quarter-finals of the Capital One Cup where they will host Southampton at Bramall Lane next month, begin another FA Cup adventure against Sky Bet League One rivals Crewe Alexandra at Gresty Road on Saturday.

And the Blades boss appreciates his side will be the team everyone wants to beat in the early rounds, he remarked:

"We're probably the biggest name in the hat at the moment and, after what the players achieved last time around, everyone will be gunning for them.

"Everyone is going to want to claim our scalp because they know it's going to make people stand-up and take notice.

"We all saw how getting to the semi-finals re-energised this place last season. The effect it had on everyone was great to see and we want that all over again if at all possible."

But the Gaffer is already warning against complacency, he is fully aware that the special occasions at Bramall Lane and days out at Villa Park are nothing more than a dream if his players fail to perform in rounds one and two.

"We only secured those big games, tasted those big atmospheres, because we got past teams like Colchester and Cambridge in the first couple of rounds.

"This is where it all starts, in matches like this, which might not be as glamorous as what could be down the line, but are no less important.

"They are the key to it all. We'd love to sample the experience all over again which is why we've got to go there and give everything we've got to try and win the tie."
