U21s 4-0 Owls - report

24 March 2014

United's development squad completed an U21s league double over their Sheffield neighbours, thanks to an emphatic victory at Shirecliffe on Monday afternoon.

Teenagers Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Otis Khan netted two goals each as the Blades dominated a Wednesday XI that included Martin Taylor, David Prutton and Gary Madine. The Blades scored three times in the opening 22 minutes and were good value for the margin of victory.

Wednesday goalkeeper Davies had already been forced into a save before the Blades took the lead on seven minutes. Khan's run saw De Girolamo lay off and CALVERT-LEWIN placed confident into the bottom corner. United's second, on 13 minutes, was a similar move apart from this time it was from the left, Hamilton provided the run and KHAN finished, after a touch from Calvert-Lewin.

The third arrived on 22 minutes, this time there was a touch of fortune as KHAN's cross deflected off a defender and landed in the bottom corner of Davies's goal.

United's Hamilton was causing all sorts of problems for Wednesday from the left flank and he had an effort saved, whilst the visiting side's only notable shot in the first half came from Floro's free-kick but Willis saved comfortably.

The Blades made it four on 61 minutes as the second half followed in a similar fashion. Another move down the left resulted in a ricochet in the box and CALVERT-LEWIN scrambled home the loose ball.

The result was not in doubt but Wednesday forced a spell of pressure. Willis saved Madine's header and then Paling cleared off the line as Clark looked to follow up, whilst Willis also made a tremendous reaction save to keep out Madine again on 76 minutes.

United, however, were always in control and De Girolamo also made it five with a couple of minutes to go but he curled wide.

There were a number of impressive performances from the Blades youngsters, including Hamilton and the central midfield duo of Dimaio and triallist O'Nien.

Blades: Willis, Hodder, Palin, Dimaio (Whiteman 62), Banton, McGinty, Khan (Coustrain 62), O'Nien, Calvert-Lewin (Smith 77), De Girolamo, Hamilton.
Unused: Reed, Eastwood.
