Nigel Clough has revealed that Shaun Miller made the decision to head out of Bramall Lane on loan.
The 26-year-old striker joined Shrewsbury Town over the weekend and stepped off the bench to score the winner in a 2-1 victory over Bradford City.
Clough said: "With Jose Baxter and Jamie Murphy rotating and then Billy Paynter and Chis Porter, it was difficult to get Shaun games, we haven't been able to get him on the pitch.
"We talked about getting him out on loan to play more regularly, hopefully it goes well and then he comes back and has a good pre-season."
Miller, who scored United's late winner in the FA Cup fourth round replay at Fulham, will miss the trip to Wembley for the semi-final against Hull as the loan is until the end of the season.
"We gave him the choice but he thought it was more important to go out and play games," added Clough.
