Blades v Carlisle

Blades 1-0 Carlisle - report

The Blades made it a perfect ten on Wednesday night - Carlisle United the latest victims.

Jose Baxter's first half goal ensured the Blades have now won ten games on the bounce - a Club record.

The FA Cup semi-finalists were well on top and deserving of the victory.

After Sunday's FA Cup exploits, chief Clough made just one change for the visit of the Cumbrians -Davies taking over from Brayford at right full-back. Paynter returned to the bench after being cup tied and fellow loanee Freeman was also amongst the substitutes, looking for his debut.

It took 22 seconds for the first chance to materialise when Murphy went around Pearson before seeing his shot cannon off the legs of goalkeeper Pickford. Five minutes later the Scottish trio of Collins, Flynn and Scougall combined with the latter also having a shot saved.

Miller failed to get on the end of an Amoo cross as Carlisle threatened and the latter also shot at Howard from distance. United, however, were quickly back on the attack and Baxter's effort was wide after Coady, Davies and Scougall linked.

On 19 minutes Coady put Scougall in the clear but again Pickford saved with his legs and moments later Flynn shot across goal and just wide after a neat Baxter pass.

Before the half-hour, though, the Blades were ahead. Following Murphy's pass inside, Coady drilled in a pass to BAXTER, who controlled beautifully before stepping inside his marker and curling home, via the inside of Pickford's left post.

The remainder of the half saw United on top without seriously threatening Carlisle's goal once more and, in the space of a minute late in the half, the visitors went close on two occasions. Firstly, a powerful Potts effort was held by Howard, who also pushed away a shot on the angle from Amoo.

Early in the second period Davies was booked for hauling down Byrne but United were quickly on the offensive with couple of promising runs from Flynn. Pickford also saved from Murphy after the Scot jinked in the box following a corner.

Defending the lead, the Blades remained professional through the second period, allowing Carlisle possession in their own half but solidly protecting Howard when necessary. McGinn and Porter were introduced for Scougall and Baxter but the visitors continued to look for an equaliser.

Miller's overhead kick flashed across goal, Doyle prevented Potts getting on the end of an Amoo cross and then Symington's shot from distance was deflected just wide. On 79 minutes, Davies, positioned on a post, kept out Amoo's header from a Berrett corner.

Into the final five minutes Freeman was handed his debut, replacing Flynn, and a number of baffling refereeing decisions amused the crowd before the injury-time period brought little concern in terms of protecting the lead - United holding on to make it ten!
