Success for girls

5 June 2014

Three players from Sheffield United's Girls' Centre of Excellence, based at the Redtooth Academy at Shirecliffe, have been selected for international duty in recent weeks.

Shannon Durkin, a striker with Sheffield United's U17s squad, played in the Women's U16 UEFA Development Tournament at St George's Park at the beginning of April - an annual tournament, which this year involved Denmark, Poland and Switzerland with England finishing with a win, a draw, and a loss.

Hannah Cain and Ellie Roebuck, from United's U15s squad, were both selected for the week long England Women's U15s training camp in the Netherlands in late May. The camp included two international matches against Holland U15s with Hannah and Ellie being selected for the starting XI for both games, and England winning both games 3-0.

Goalkeeper Ellie Roebuck, pictured, also had the honour of captaining the side in both matches.

Meanwhile, Sheffield United Girls' Centre of Excellence U17s team finished their season with the now traditional annual match at Bramall Lane.

The team finished as runners up in the North East division of the FA Girls' England Talent Pathway league after an excellent season, ending up just two points behind champions Sunderland. The U17s also reached the last 16 of the FA Girls' Youth Cup where they were beaten by Leicester City

One of the most looked-forward too days of the season, though, has become the final fixture of the season which for the past five seasons has been played on the hallowed turf of S2. This year, United welcomed a very good Oxford United side to Bramall Lane.

This year's match finished in an entertaining 0-0 draw, in a game which saw two very evenly matched sides competing in a lively game of football, watched by a good crowd of supporters. This fixture is particularly memorable for those members of the U17s team (Sheldon Ashton, Brooke Chapell, Leigha Goodwin, Nikki Hogg, Rachel Taylor) who graduate from the Centre of Excellence this summer, some after almost ten years with the Club.
