Nigel Clough is looking for a positive performance against Northampton Town at Sixfields on Tuesday night.
The Blades boss wasn't too downhearted despite Saturday's 4-0 defeat at Burton Albion insisting results are secondary at this stage, but he is demanding more from his players against Chris Wilder's Cobblers.
Looking ahead, the Gaffer says pre-season is all about planning and time management, remarking: "We will be looking for some players to do 60-70 minutes, then those that don't get the game time at Northampton will feature more prominently against Dundee on Friday.
"The first few pre-season matches are about making sure all the players get a good amount of the action, before we start to focus on certain aspects as we progress.
"Getting fit and sharp remains the aim, but we our preparations are still in their infancy. We are approaching the halfway mark in our schedule and the Bristol City fixture remains the obvious focal point.
"We want and expect to see a much improved showing from the weekend too and I am sure the travelling supporters will be thinking the same."
